Bottling Chinese Spirit

...And it's not Mao-tai... Independent film-making in China is developing fast - young film-makers are gaining confidence in their new-found licence to search their own and their nation's soul. It's a time of head-spinning, stomach-churning transformation. All the films and videos in this collection portray some element of this. Su Yang mourns the loss of his ethnic minority culture and the wider sense of dislocation brought about by break-neck, free-wheeling capitalism. Other films tackle environmental issues or personal transformations. Wu Ying, the 70 year old breakdancing star of Wu Tang Gran is the personification of her words "your own spirit is tied to that of your nation". The challenge for new film-makers is to capture this spirit of now in a time of change.
